Fully complete and ready for work, widely known hydraulic hammer «Impulse 120» has just left Technopark «Impulse» factory. Skid steer loader lifted off the pallet with the hydraulic hammer shining on the sun through the shrink wrap packing and the van has just escaped around the corner, delivering such an essential and needed by someone purchase. And I just thought — what will be the future doom of the hammer? Will it rip up the asphalt in Sochi, will it be involved in building demolition in Arhangelsk, or maybe it will help to cope with ever-frost ground in Norilsk?
Probably it’s not of much importance, because we are confident that Impulse 120 hammer will easily and perfectly cope with any task it face. Where this confidence comes from? Let’s discuss it hereafter.
«Impulse 120» hammer is a perfect compromise of simplicity, low owning cost, ease of use, singularity, experience and developed sophisticated technologies. We are using raw materials of the leading global manufacturers only, which directly work on the hammer’s quality and simply can’t be neglected. The hydraulic hammer’s body proved its value due to unsophisticated but unassailable all-welded design; its cylinder and front head are welded by a unique welding technology. The shape of the bottom part of Impulse 120 hammer is very handy for use: it lets the hammer’s working tool get into the tightest and inaccessible for other hydraulic hammers places.
Impulse hammer’s steelwork is made of strong and extrafine «Domex» steel, supplied from Sweden. Piston-sleeve pair, with the requirement that the hammer is operated correctly, is a super-reliable and durable unit. This fact is guaranteed by the high quality and carefully selected raw materials, high steelwork hardness, special chemical treatment of sliding surfaces, polishing and particular final machining, providing micron-accuracy to the product. Pressurization of the hydraulic hammer inside cavities is ensured by Japanese sealings which help to withstand high pressure and high temperatures. Another clever engineering solution is embodied in the joint: front head and working tool. Firm and hardened thrust washer of the working tool, made of highly alloyed steel, is pressed into the front head of the hydraulic hammer. Solid working tool bush is casehardened — to increase its lifecycle; it is polished and has different diameters of the mounting surfaces — to simplify assembly-disassembly process. Working tool solid bush is fixed in the front head by the working tool pin, which is very convenient for use and service. High-quality spool and sleeve of the distributive control valve of the hydraulic hammer is supplied by the leading South Korean manufacturer. These are, to my mind, basic features making the hydraulic hammer Impulse 120 such a popular product. But all the above mentioned features are not enough to reach the level of the world’s leading manufacturers of the hydraulic hammers and to become a real competitor to them. Here we speak about formation of manufacturing trends and traditions, production culture, which are not easy and fast to acquire.
But for a manufacturing company this is the only way leading to progress and development, that’s why Technopark «Impulse» stepped on this path. We brought in and have been using up to now a complete and careful Management quality system: all the main parts apart from being controlled by Technical Control department are marked as well. This marking provides information, which is being kept in the company’s data base. That means, that having a serial number of the hydraulic hammer from its label or by the number of the stroke block on the cap we can check when and by whom the hammer was assembled, what parts were used in the hammer production, testing results, were there any comments or notes during the hammer components production and many other things. We implemented long storage system and automatic wash of the hammer’s components before assembling. We pay much attention to hammer’s appearance: it has peculiar design; it is well-painted, carefully stored and duly packed. In the production of our hydraulic hammer «Impulse 120» we use the world’s leading achievements in chemical industry, such as, for example, «Henkel Group» — which produce sealer compounds of best quality, and many-many other suppliers whose names can’t be disclosed because of the commercial confidentiality rules of our company. Most of our attention in production is drawn to the quality of hammer’s components supplied by external suppliers, which are thoroughly checked before making a deal. Each part is inspected and tested before it will become one of Impulse 120 component. By these means our production and as a result our customers are secured from low-quality of the hammer components and the hammer itself.
As far as manufacturing culture is concerned, we’d like to emphasize the culture of hammer’s operation, based on the feedback from our customers. There is a stereotype in people’s mind that all the products produced in Russia, are of bad quality, require constant service and maintenance, nondurable and unpractical. But based on our customers’ feedback we jumped to the conclusion that this stereotype has been breaking little by little.
But pretty often we face hydraulic hammers’ failures due to wrong and improper operation. Can you imagine the sound steward owner of expensive hydraulic hammer who is working at the construction, just leaving the hammer for more than a month dipped into the concrete? And when he is back — insist on the correct and proper hammer working condition. And with the hammers of domestic manufacturing — it is a regular thing. So often we can view the hammer left in transport position for a long time, with working tool in up position in such a rainy and wet summer. As a result the piston is rusted and the sleeve is damaged. One more failure often happens due to careless operation when the simple maintenance rules are neglected — the gap between working tool and tool bush increases up to 20 mm, despite maximum 6 mm acceptable by the manual. And so many facts of the hammer misuse — when the operator is digging with help of the working tool, move, lifts, knocks objects which is strictly prohibited in the manuals to all the hydraulic hammers produced by both foreign and domestic manufacturers. And as a result the hammer’s sides’ crack and other important units of the hammer badly damaged. We thoroughly investigate and examine all these failures and always work on their elimination. Our engineering team is constantly working on the improvement and development of the hammer components and welding procedures, careful raw material choice and treatment, which help to increase hammer’s lifecycle and its wear proof, and to check the hammer’s quality numerous testings of the equipment are carried out.

Here below please find some good pieces of advice for correct hammer’s operation:
- Never let any dirt get inside the hydraulic circuit when mounting or dismounting the attachment. It may happen even if quick couplers are used.
- Change the hydraulic oil and filters of carrier regularly as required in the manual. If carrier is up-to-date it is enough for correct operation of hydraulic attachments. But if it’s not — it’s better to read the attachment’s manual and find out the hydraulic circuit and oil pureness requirements.
- Grease working tool as often as possible, it’ll be fully compensated in future.
- Don’t operate the hammer continuously and pauseless: if the material is not crushed during 10-15 seconds of hammer’s operation, reposition your hammer and crush the material in another spot. It will help you to crush the object faster and protect your hammer.
- Do not use your hammer to move, lift or knock the objects — it was designed to crush the material
- Carefully watch the condition of the pair working tool — tool bush. The gap between them must not exceed 6 mm, it may cause the damage of expensive part of the hydraulic hammer.
- Save piston from corrosion, it’s a blank side of all the hydraulic hammers. Do not storage your hammer outside, you’d better dismount it from the carrier, storage it in warm and dry place, take the working tool out of the front head, let the nitrogen gas out of pneumatic chamber and put the piston in the up position, by light hammering on the piston’s butt through the front head, leaving the hydraulic circuit in and outlets should be open. Be careful as the oil will come out of drain port! When the piston is moved to fully up position, close charge valves cover and hydraulic circuit ports.
All these rules are very easy to follow, and if they are fully observed, you can be sure your hammer is in good working condition and ready for future jobs and next working season. To get the hammer ready for operation you just have to install the working tool, connect the hydraulic circuits of the hammer & carrier and fill pneumatic chamber of the hammer with nitrogen gas.
